Delta V

Delta-v: The Speed of Change in Space

What is Delta-v?

Delta-v (pronounced "delta-vee") is a measure of the change in velocity of an object. In spacecraft flight dynamics, it is a key parameter in planning and executing space missions, from orbital transfers to interplanetary travel.

How Delta-v is Used in Space Missions

When a spacecraft maneuvers in space, it must change its velocity in order to achieve its desired trajectory. The amount of delta-v required for a particular maneuver depends on the initial and final velocities of the spacecraft, as well as the mass of the spacecraft. In general, the greater the change in velocity, the greater the amount of delta-v required.

Delta-v is also used to determine the mass of fuel that is required for a space mission. The total mass of fuel required is proportional to the total delta-v required for the mission. Therefore, it is important to minimize the delta-v requirements for a mission in order to reduce the mass of fuel that is needed.
