Co-founder of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried seeks retrial, claims legal errors
The founder and former CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, has filed a motion for a retrial, arguing that the court made several legal errors during his trial that prejudiced the jury against him.
Bankman-Fried was found guilty on all 12 counts against him, including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, in connection with the collapse of FTX. He is currently facing a maximum sentence of 115 years in prison.
In his motion for a retrial, Bankman-Fried's lawyers argue that the court erred in several ways, including:
- Denying Bankman-Fried's request to delay the trial so that he could adequately prepare his defense.
- Excluding evidence that Bankman-Fried was not aware of the alleged fraud and money laundering.
- Allowing the prosecution to introduce evidence of Bankman-Fried's political donations.
Bankman-Fried's lawyers also argue that the court made several errors in its jury instructions, which prejudiced the jury against him. For example, the court instructed the jury that it could consider Bankman-Fried's wealth as evidence of his guilt.
The government has not yet responded to Bankman-Fried's motion for a retrial. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for March 13.
Bankman-Fried's co-founder, Gary Wang, has also filed a motion for a retrial. Wang was found guilty on four counts of fraud and conspiracy. He is currently facing a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.
