The inaugural Corrida Pão de Açúcar was held in 1984 as part of the celebrations leading up to the 40th anniversary of the Rio de Janeiro City Council.

The race is organized by Rio de Janeiro City Hall and is open to runners aged 18 and older.

Race Course

The Corrida Pão de Açúcar race course starts at Praia Vermelha Beach in the Urca neighborhood. Runners ascend through the Tijuca National Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a challenging trail leading to the base of Sugarloaf Mountain.

The steep climb culminates at the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain, where runners are rewarded with stunning views of Rio's skyline and landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer and Guanabara Bay.

The race course is divided into two main categories: the 10km and the 17km. The 10km race is a loop course that starts and finishes at Praia Vermelha Beach. The 17km race is a more challenging out-and-back course that extends to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain.
